LUKE 3:2 The word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
John the Baptist is the one whose father was told he would go on before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah and he would prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. This was John’s life. Everything he does is what must be done before Jesus can come to His people. What does John tell us must happen before Jesus can be received by people? John begins with a message of repentance. The passage from Isaiah puts it well. When a King was to visit another country the host country went out and fixed the roads for his journey. There was a preparation which had to happen first. The preparation which John says must happen before anyone can enter into the Kingdom of God is repentance. Why? What is repentance? Why must this come first?
