benSo much of life is ordinary and commonplace.  We work, play sports, eat, watch TV, and get wrapped up in the events of the day to day, and slowly we forget that those things are just the things people do with their time, not the things people really live for.  And that’s why I love the written word so much.  When I read that amazing poem, or get wrapped up in that beautiful novel, I remember that life is something more than what I have been living, and I’m convinced once again to live my life to the full.  Thoreau once said, “When we are unhurried and wise, we perceive that only great and worthy things have any absolute and permanent existence, that petty fears and petty pleasures are but the shadow of reality.”

That is the feeling I try and capture in my writing, the perception that great and worthy things really do exist in the world to be found, that we ought to fight for them.  I hope when you read the blog, you feel that same way.  And if you’re willing to read one of the novels, I hope the story gives you that indescribable longing to want to live deeper than you did before you read it.  Thanks so much for reading the Things I’ve Learned While Roaming the Earth.  Now a little bit about me.

I was born and raised in San Diego, California, am definitely more than somewhat inclined towards what I call “Adventure,” which others may call “Foolhardy Danger” :)  When I was 18, I knew I wanted to be a writer.  But instead of getting a degree in English, I set out to do something absolutely and completely different with my life.  At 23, I felt the call to go and serve the poor and I lived in the country of Cambodia for a year with a family of missionaries.  It was there, actually, that I wrote the first draft of “Shadows on the Edge of Town.”  Cambodia was an absolutely amazing place, and the vibrance and vivacity of everything really sparked my creative and adventuresome spirit and set me on the path of novel writing.

Once I returned from Cambodia, I went to live with my Aunt and Uncle in Northern Minnesota, in the woods bordering a town of 93 residents.  I lived there for 3 years and spent my time working with my hands in the great outdoors and writing.  I studied many volumes of poetry and fell in love with the more refined and elegant style of writing.  It was in Minnesota that I composed “At Home Across the Sea,” which is a historical fiction set in the early 1600’s in America.  If you happen to read it, you’ll notice the old-fashioned, elegant style of writing I employed, which was consistent with the type of writing I was studying at the time.

After Minnesota, I again returned to San Diego, and I began working/volunteering full time as a mentor at a youth ranch for boys.  I spent 2 years there, and composed the short work called “Mountainside,” which is really a philosophical, reflective look at life, and the differences between city life and living off the beaten path in solitude.  Currently, I’m a full time writer/author and love every minute of it.  Thank you so much for reading about the things that make me, me.  I hope you’ll read more of the blog and check out one of my books.
