When I Saw You

When I saw you it was as though a morning had dawned

Round night mists yet gathered on a silent, still pond.

And the light of your smile was the first gleam of day,

And your eyes, the slow river that brought me away.

Away from the land where my troubles abide,

Once restless and raw as the shifting tide.

At last to the glow of the bright boundless sea.

Where deep calls to deep, and she calls to me.

    deep calls to deep

longing for that connection that understanding that knowing.
is it better to know or to love? to be known or to be loved?
    and yet the longing.

    deep calls to deep

Interesting question. In the old Greek and Hebrew, the word for intimacy was simply “to know.” From that standpoint, loving and knowing are just two sides of the same coin. But to answer your question more directly, I would say it is much better to love and be loved, for real love, to me, encompasses knowledge. Interesting name, “Her.” I suppose I shouldn’t ask you who you are since you’ve obviously chosen anonymity. Thanks for your comments and question.

Oh Ben, that is such a lovely poem. Drawn to one as one is drawn to nature, one could not want for a truer love than that.

Thanks Genevieve :) I love the feeling of being drawn, of being compelled. There’s nothing like it. I’m very glad you approve!

“And your eyes, the slow river that brought me away.” What a wonderful poem…and that line in particular is lovely!! I didn’t know you were a poet, too!! Thanks so much for sharing this. What a gift!

hmmm…I agree that love encompasses knowledge, but not knowledge in the sense of ‘head knowledge’, for what child does not love, without ‘knowing’ another, but yet they ‘know’ in a different way. To love without head knowledge, but perhaps heart knowledge? or soul knowledge? or rather quite simply ‘to know’ knowledge. (did that sound like a strange mixture between Dr. Seuss and Kant?) haha

Haha, yeah that’s awesome. It’s a very interesting discussion, one which I don’t have the right answers for. I agree with everything you’re saying. I think the big difference comes, like you mentioned, between knowledge of the head and the heart. One of the intriguing things I discovered awhile back while reading the Proverbs in the Bible, was the author kept mentioning wisdom with the heart. He constantly said things like “The wise in heart” will do this or that. It really intrigued me because I had never thought of wisdom being with the heart before.

So, now I get to ask a question :) Is there a reason why you’re using an alias instead of your real name? Are you someone I’ve met before?

    Good morning!
I will end the intrigue…my name is Molly, I choose not to use it before because I think mystery is fun and wanted to add some into your life. ha! We have not met, at least not that I am aware of.

Yes, Proverbs, full of ‘wisdom’ and that of the heart. I feel the closer we become to God the purer we are, the more whole we become and the ‘knowledge’becomes more whole. Like a child, I suppose.

Enjoy your day Ben and nice to meet you.

Good morning Molly. It’s very good to meet you as well. And yes mystery is fun :)

That’s interesting what you say about purity. I think you’re very right. It makes me think of one of the beatitudes in Matthew 5: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Wholeness and closeness to God definitely go hand in hand. That could be a good blog subject :) You should write it so I can comment anonymously on it :) Have a very good morning. Thanks for chatting with me. I enjoy it.

good morning Ben! It’s my birthday-will you write me a poem for my birthday? Make sure it includes spaceships. Thanks.

    :)

Haha, that’s awesome! Happy birthday. Let me see what I can come up with. I’ll email it to you.

  17. Posted September 10, 2009 at 9:51 am | Permalink

Here goes the first rendition :)

My greatest fear is that someday
A spaceship may come and take Her away
And leave me to wander this desolate place
Alone, as she soars through the vastness of space

When I Saw You, we met for the very first time
And you were to me as song is to rhyme
How grateful I am for the man I became,
When at last she was willing to tell me Her name.

You could be 50, you could be 15
Or anything else that comes in between
But I wish you the happiest birthday today
Please don’t let a spaceship take you away.
